I remember a presidential debate a while back--I think it was Al Gore and George W. Bush. Anyway, the moderator asked W. something about the men who dragged James Byrd to his death. W. got all twitchy and a little gleeful and said, ''The three men who -- who murdered James Byrd. Guess what's going to happen to them? They're going to be put to death. A jury found them guilty and -- it's going to be hard to punish them any worse after they get put to death."
I thought of W.'s cluelessness as I read this morning's Plain Dealer at the stop lights. the paper said Anthony Sowell (above), the man convicted of rape and in whose home Cleveland police found six dead bodies, was repeatedly denied parole because of "the serious nature" of his crime. It also says Sowell did not receive sex-offender treatment, even though he requested it.
So the prison industrial complex had enough sense to keep Sowell locked up, but not enough to help heal him while he was incarcerated. Six dead bodies says that was a bad call.
W. 's "Texas Solution" to crime--the focus on punishment and not the person--is how most people see criminals. They are people to be thrown away-- locked up and, if necessary, executed. But what happens when they re-enter the community? Something like six thousand ex-offenders return to Cuyahoga County every year. Sure, you do the crime, you do the time. But our prisons are inhumane and violent ( rape and sexual abuse are rampant) with little emphasis on rehabilitation--do you want those raw and angry souls released back into your community without therapy?
The PD says Sowell tried to help himself. He took courses to help him with his anger "Living without Violence," "Cage your Rage," and "Positive Personal Change."
Gee, why didn't they just give him a copy of The Secret?!
The man had a serious mental problem. He knew he needed help. He also joined Alcoholics Anonymous, Adult Children of Alcoholics, and "Drug Awareness Prevention." He asked for help. He didn't get it.
Instead of focusing on the gory details of Sowell's murdering spree, I hope someone at the Plain Dealer investigates the Ohio Prison system (one of the largest in the country) to see if there's some way to make serving time about preparing people to re-enter society and not "Oz."
Or they could put a whole bunch of new half-way houses in Rocky River. That'd be something!

This man is knee-deep in women's blood and you're whining about how he didn't get all the classes he wanted in prison?
People like you are the problem.
Whatever. You are the problem. He was not rehabilitated in prison and was released to kill 11 people.
Don't ever call what I do whining, not until you can sign your name.
Start your own blog--if you can read.
I am not in the mood.
oh, and I forgot: ya mama.
What a nightmare! The "classes" this man sought out were to help him break the cycle of addiction, violence, & being a sexual predator.
This IS a case in point that just locking up a person who has these severe issues is not rehabbing them- and might even ramp up their rage.
Every step of the way, the system failed him-- including reporting him publicly as a sexual predator, and the police flubbing follow up on his probation & dropping the ball a multitude of times... including a woman who was naked & near unconscious by his house.
Was it because it was a poor neighborhood?
Was it because it was black women he killed-- and I hate dredging up the race card.... but you have to wonder if this happened in a wealthy white suburb, if this predator would have committed so many murders.
People who commit violent & sexual crimes need more supervision - and the community needs to be made aware of their presence.
Not to impose a stigma.... but if they made this public.... someone somewhere could have put 2 & 2 together & realized that foul odor so many reported, was related. All those missing women lived in close proximity of the known sexual predator.
What is most sad is that the families don't get closure, they have a 2nd trauma, knowing their loved ones died a violent death.
I hope they did not die in vein. I hope the police, jail & probation people wake up & smell the gross negligence.
So many entities failed.
Thanks, Fran, Anonymous had me mad.
I saw the news conference where they were talking about I.D.ing the bodies. The Police Cheif kept saying that it was hard because they didn't know what kind of people the deceased were--I guess meaning some were drug addicts and prostitutes. One station asked how 11 people cd disappear in one area and law enforcement didn't even notice. SMH
well where is Anony....cuz damn out of line idiot must not live here- cuz it's REAL unsettling to live with this going on within spitting distance...it's upsetting on soooo many levels-because it was failure on soso many levels....
jail failed him..
he gets out and NO ONE monitors him? No One warns the neighbors- and yeah- no one takes responsibility now...the police want to "study the lifestyles of the victims"( watched the asshole chief presser tonigt at 6PM...ugh....)
ok..
I could go on and on..
we need coffee...
or Something...
I am beyond pisssed about this...
those WOMEN mattered...
and the police don't give a damn..
those poor families..
btw your photo is lovely...wonderfiul...
and yeah I bloggged this horrible story too...damn
( and I am not a big Nancy Grace fan...but tonight she was all over it...she thinks our police suck..)
Nobody is saying the serial killer is a victim, and I hate that "examine the lifestyle of the victim" slant.
Because even if you are a drug dealer, or prostitute or any number of unsavory/illegal choices.... those people do not deserve to die horrible violent/predatory deaths.
Plus Anon misses the point-- he did not want cooking & basketweaving classes, he wanted how to change your life type stuff.
Your follow up post is right on.... we NEED to know how did this guy get this way.
Well at least now we can just pop him in a chair and give him lethal injection.
bvnb
Classic. Absolutely Classic. A black guy kills black women in a black area of town and you figure out a way to BLAME WHITEY. Yea, it's the system's fault he killed all those women, not his. All we need in prison's now are a few more classes on why it's bad to kill people and this king of thing is a thing of the past. How can you possibly bleed one more ounce of victomhood out of something like this. Unreal.
