I am not about to wish you and anybody else a Happy Halloween. Halloween has got on my natural nerves.
Now, if you are a pagan or wiccan or something like that, and Halloween is your chance to get in touch with your beliefs--I have no beef with you. But if you are grown-ass grown and treating today like it's the Second Coming, I'm talking to you.
I have a friend, we'll call her "Clarissa," who has already taken her 20 month old to three malls, two hayrides, and various other put-on-a-costume-and-walk-around events. Already! I teased her and said she needed to get a Halloween advent calendar so she could just spend the whole month of October in ghoulish anticipation of the big day. I'm afraid to ask her child when Jesus was born, because I know she's gonna say, "Halloween!"
All I've heard at work for the past three weeks were ideas for "family" costumes--you know how the whole family is going to dress up. "We could be the Captain and Tenille and the baby could be the piano!" "We could all wear Snuggies!" and on and on.
And don't hide behind that "it's-all-for-the-kids." It's estimated that hard-working folk spend $4.75 billion on Halloween--and that's downsized from last year's $5.77 billion before the recession got good and in our pocketbooks. Really? 4 billion dollars on a day that used to be for little kids to go get some fun-sized Snickers from the neighbors?
Fine. Dress up like Hannibal Lecter and get drunk all you want. But why not have a party and ask people to bring canned goods for the local city mission or, kick it old school and collect money for UNICEF or something? I mean, you're already spending billions.
Boo, Halloween, boo.

Oh Ms. KB you are missing the fun of it all.
Now I agree, the $ spent is crazy (how many homeless shelters could that kind of $ support?), but it is a day of creativity, a kind of theater to be what you are normally not.
A local venue is doing just that... asking people to bring cans of food for the food bank, as a part of the admission fee.
I never liked those store bought costumes & even as kids, we'd hit up Goodwill because it was like a treasure chest for Halloween costumes.
I did not spend one dime on a costume... but wore a flamboyant tie die full length dress, bandana, peace earrings & carried a sign on a piece of cardboard that read
"Woodstock or Bust", flashed the peace sigh a lot as well.
You mean to tell me as a kid you did not absolutely love going trick or treating & having a sugar high for about a week???
Every year about 100 kids come trick or treating @ our door.... we even have a screaming doormat a friend gave us- that she bought at a yard sale.
I think halloween brings out the creativity & "kid" in us all. Having time to lighten up & have fun is a good thing.
Tell it like it is!By the way the word verifacation word right now for your blog is "Crazies" LOL
Great alternative ideas! Did you hear about the Dentist who is offering to pay $1 a pound for candy collected tonight, then send it to the troops overseas.
KellyBelle,
I am on the floor right now cracking up!!!
This is hilarious!
*LOL*

That cracked me up! Oh, this post was so on point. I was at CVS today and blinked when the cashier from India said at the end of our transaction, "Happy Halloween!" What? Do I look like a child? Teenager? Nooo, she just assumes all Americans are dumb-tards.
Anyway, Kellybelle, I wrote a bangin' good fictional short story, my first for my blog. I invite you and others to read it. Given your interest in mental health, I think you'll like it.
Kellybelle, email me.

LOL! If there were a Halloween grinch it would be you!
In my defense, I like dressing up in general. I just think it is a fun, creative thing to do. All our costume stuff was made by hand or altered from thrift stores finds. My daughter's outfit was store bought, but she's keeping it for her costume trunk so she can play dress up with it for years to come.
Plus, we were all characters from a book! A book! That encourages reading!
You know me, if it wasn't for Halloween, I'd be planning costumes for a fan convention or a lavish birthday party, so this is my outlet and something fun we can do as a family.
PS - One of the Halloween events I went to asked us to bring canned foods, which I did!
