The Golden Ticket

I was busy making semi-precious-looking-stone earrings (hush, spinsters love crafting), and watching CNN. A young man who had received tickets to Michael Jackson's memorial service tomorrow was being interviewed. It was like he had won the lottery! The CNN anchor actually said, "Congratulations!"

Hello? That man didn't win anything. He's going to a funeral, not a rock concert. I know Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and Thriller sold more copies than the Bible and Elvis' daughter is his ex-wife and Bubbles and the hyperbaric chamber and the Elephant Man's bones...but a news organization is really reaching when it interviews a would-be mourner like a contestant on The Price Is Right.

I know something newsworthy is going on--Honduras? Health Care? Sarah Palin and the collapse of the far right wing of the Republican Party? Reports say the Wilshire Grand Los Angeles Hotel is almost completely booked tonight and tomorrow. It's like the Inauguration or something.

We're at a place in our culture where the respect and regard of the people around you are no longer enough. Folks need to be seen and known by everybody with a television. It doesn't matter that you haven't cultivated a discernible talent, just as long as the spill of the spotlight shines a little on you.

SMH.

Hey there!

KellyBelle I haven't seen the reactions of the "winners" of the admission tickets to the funeral but I agree with you that this entire "event" is soooo macabre...

Only in America do we have a lottery to attend a funeral...

And of course, all of those millions who registered now have their names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers being sold to mailing list companies...how guillible that they willingly put all of that info on line in some company's database just to enter the lottery...

i'm waiting for a riot to happen....it just seems like this is going to end in a HUGE mess - do they really think that people without tickets are going to just stay home?

Well, at least they did not *Sell tickets*... although you just know scalpers will try... you have to go in person & show ID to get 2 tickets... they will give a ticket and a wrist bracelet.... any tampered with bracelets will be void.

Still I bet you find scalpers on E Bay, workin' it trying to make a buck.

Gosh-- ya think they will televise or record it?

Of course they will.

MJ will bump Palin back out of the spotlight.

I don;t think there will be a riot, they said something about using another large space for spillover.... Sony can put up a jumbotron somewhere w a live broadcast.
